Correcting an Arm Throw or Shoulder-Carry Throw into Proper Pitching Form (For Those With No Baseball Team Experience)

This post can be read in about 3 minutes.

For someone who has no experience in school baseball and has started playing amateur baseball, I think the biggest difference will be in their ability to "throw the ball."
Throwing is a skill that is greatly involved in both fielding and pitching.
Ideally, you should make sure you have a solid grasp of it.

However, the correct way to throw a baseball is quite complex.
For this particular skill, it's more important to be taught in person or to watch videos and practice repeatedly, rather than just reading books.

I myself have developed a throwing habit that's sometimes called a "shoulder throw" or "arm throw."
I was able to improve my throwing technique somewhat after watching a certain video, so I thought I'd share it.

A man who had been throwing with his arm for 20 years underwent a dramatic transformation thanks to "Maru Kaite Pon".

A man who had been throwing armball for 20 years makes a dramatic change with "Maru Kaite Pon" (1:46~)
This video is from "qooninTV," which distributes many videos related to baseball.
Let's take a look at the trainer's movements starting at 1:46 in this video.
It's difficult to explain in writing, so I recommend watching the video first.
The phrase "lower, raise, draw a circle, and press" resonated with me personally and made perfect sense.

In my throwing style

In my case, I didn't do the "draw a circle" part shown in this video; I just tossed it straight away.
However, after repeatedly tracing the movements while watching the relevant section of this video, I managed to improve somewhat.

The "draw a circle" part might be a little hard to understand, but rather than actively drawing a circle with your hand, the idea is to keep the part of your hand holding the ball in place (delaying its forward movement) while shifting your weight forward using your elbow, shoulder, and the rest of your body.
This hand position causes the ball to come out with a slight delay, allowing you to throw it with a whipping motion.
Furthermore, when you bend your arm at the end of the throw, you can't throw smoothly without using your hip rotation, which naturally puts your weight into the ball.

Results of actually trying it out in a game of catch

I was a little nervous, but thanks to repeatedly practicing while watching videos, I was able to throw it right away.
I could definitely feel that my pitches were faster compared to my previous throwing style.
At first, my hand was slow to come out, but I would release it at the same time as usual, and it often went off to the upper right.
However, once I got used to this throwing style, my ball control improved, and I started throwing better balls with more weight behind them.

The person who played catch with me also said, "The ball is clearly heavier!"

Furthermore, when I tried this arm position to throw a curveball, the amount of movement and sharpness of the ball clearly improved.
To be honest, my curveball is a slow ball with a bit of a parabolic trajectory, and it drops a little bit early in the middle of its trajectory.
Not only did the ball speed increase, but it also changed sharply, like a slider.
This is only a side effect, but I did feel that my throwing technique had improved.

In conclusion

I believe that how you hit or throw largely depends on whether or not it suits your individual "feel."
I found this video very easy to understand.
However, I don't think that applies to everyone.

Continuing to throw like this might cause you to injure some part of your body.
However, as a recreational baseball player, I'm simply happy that I'm now able to throw good pitches.
I plan to continue practicing repeatedly so that I can apply what I learn not only to pitching but also to throwing in the field.
