What are the characteristics of a good defensive player in baseball? Let's consider the elements that make them so.

This post can be read in about 5 minutes.

In baseball, we often hear the expression "a player who is good at fielding."
So, what exactly does it mean to be good at defense?
Is it the strength of his arm, or the speed to catch up to the ball, or his reaction time to the batted ball?
This time, I'd like to delve a little deeper into what elements make up good defensive play.
I hope this will help me to re-examine my own shortcomings in defense and to enjoy watching baseball games even more.

Definition of "good defense"

I believe that being "good at defense" ultimately means being a player with a "low expected number of goals conceded."
In other words, it's a player who can make movements that minimize the number of goals conceded by the team during defensive situations.

There are many factors that can reduce the expected number of goals conceded.
While easily observable aspects like arm strength and fielding range are certainly important, other factors such as judging batted balls, positioning, and situational awareness can also be cited.
In the following sections, we will examine each element in detail.

Shoulder strength

Having a strong arm is a direct advantage in defense.
If the throw speed from where the ball is caught to first base is fast, the probability of getting the out naturally increases.
Furthermore, having a strong arm often works indirectly to your advantage, as it can cause runners to give up on advancing or hold back.

However, shoulder strength is partly determined by one's natural arm strength, and there are limits to how much it can be improved.
If your shoulder isn't particularly strong, you might need to consider moving to a position where shoulder strength isn't as crucial.

Catching technique

There are many different patterns to batted balls.
There could be strong ground balls that skim the ground, soft ground balls, line drives, fly balls, and half-bounces.
Catching technique is the ability to catch the ball in the proper way.
At a professional level, a player should be able to catch almost any ball hit within their defensive range.
This is where the difference becomes apparent when dealing with difficult hits.
In normal play, this might not make much of a difference, but it's a fundamental element that forms the core of defense.

Running ability

Speed is a factor that greatly affects one's defensive range.
For infielders, it becomes important when chasing down a ball that looks like it might get through the gaps in the defense, or when advancing on a slow ground ball.
For outfielders, this is an important skill for catching up to fast fly balls and line drives.
Speed is something that's difficult to improve later in life, but it's often an advantage in defense.
I've noticed that good defensive players are often fast runners.

Ball batting judgment and reaction speed

This is the element that allows a batter to instantly judge where the ball will go after hitting it and then move accordingly.
If this skill is excellent, it can shorten the time it takes to catch the ball, thus compensating for things like speed or arm strength.
While reflexes and other factors are involved, it is possible to prepare your body for smooth movement by adjusting your stance while waiting for the ball to be hit.
This is where skills like how you wait can make a difference.

Positioning technology

This technique involves adjusting defensive positions based on data such as the direction of each batter's batted ball, the catcher's stance and lead, and the overall situation.
This allows you to start from a more advantageous position to catch up to the batted ball.
Furthermore, by using extreme positioning, it's possible to prevent the batter from batting freely.
However, poor positioning carries the risk of the batter targeting the open space.
Therefore, it is difficult to quantify, making it challenging to objectively judge whether someone is good or bad at something.

Situation assessment

It's the ability to judge where to throw the ball to get an out and prevent the runner from advancing.
For example, in the infield, if a ball hit to home plate would likely result in a run being scored anyway, there are times when you need to throw to a base where you can definitely get an out.
In addition to this ability to avoid fielder's choices, they also have the ability to judge whether or not to take a gamble play depending on the flow of the game and the score difference.
Sometimes it's better to play it safe and catch a single ball reliably rather than attempting a diving catch on a difficult ball hit to the outfield.
In situations like these, the ability to consistently choose actions that have a lower expected risk of conceding goals is what I consider to be situational awareness.

Collaboration ability

While we don't criticize individuals for their coordination, teamwork is certainly an important element.
The main aspects that involve coordination are things like agreements on where to return the ball between the infield and outfield, and double plays between second base and shortstop.
One example is a pickoff play signaled by the catcher.
The ability to execute such coordination flawlessly, reliably, and appropriately is also a crucial element of defense.

Communication skills

Communication is also an important element of defense, as it relates to teamwork.
One example of this is the vocalizations used when deciding how far to pursue a fly.
Furthermore, encouraging the team and offering words of support to help the pitcher regain their composure are also part of their abilities.
If these actions motivate other members and enable them to perform exceptionally well, then this too can be considered an action that reduces the expected number of goals conceded.
This is something that can't be quantified, but I think it will be related to defense.

summary

Above, I've listed various factors that influence "defensive skill."
Each factor may have a slightly different impact on the expected number of goals conceded, but by being aware of each element, you will be able to appreciate the depth of defense more.
I hope this will be helpful when you watch a game and enjoy watching the defense, or when you think about your own defensive play.
