Introduction and review of the manga "Vlad Dracula" (by Akiyo Okubo)

ドラキュラ Manga and anime
This post can be read in about 4 minutes.

This article introduces "Vlad Dracula," a comic book that focuses on the 15th-century Principality of Wallachia in Romania.
The ruler of the Principality of Wallachia is most famous for his nicknames, such as "Dracula," "Vlad Tepes," and "Vlad the Impaler."
The image of "Dracula = vampire" has become so well-known that it's generally associated with a bloody and gruesome image.

In this work, he is depicted as a wise ruler who uses political maneuvering and strategic thinking to protect his country from invasion by a great power.
Perhaps because I wasn't familiar with many manga that dealt with this era and region, I found it very refreshing and interesting.
(As of November 2021, 5 volumes have been published.)

overview

In terms of genre, I think it would be classified as a historical manga depicting political struggles and war.

In the Principality of Wallachia, where the story takes place, the nobility holds real power, and sound governance is not in place.
Although Vlad III, the protagonist, is a monarch, the power is actually held by a council composed of nobles, partly due to the frequent turnover of monarchs.
Vlad, in his ceremonial position, outwardly displays obedience to the nobility, but secretly harbors a desire for political reform.
At the start of the story, his own power base is still weak, and he is not in a position to openly oppose the nobility, but he gradually gains more reliable confidants.

The overall feel of the first volume is that of a rookie CEO who skillfully takes down corrupt management (political rivals) and implements business reforms.
Once the story begins to openly clash with the nobility, you'll be immersed in a different kind of thrilling reading experience.

This appears to be the debut work of the author, Akiyo Okubo, and her serious art style is well-suited to the historical genre.
The artwork isn't particularly distinctive, so I think you'll be able to get into the story without feeling any discomfort.

My thoughts (with some spoilers)

The story was incredibly interesting; I read it in one sitting and was completely drawn into its world.
I sensed a clear intention to portray Vlad III as a solid historical figure, separate from the horror-fantasy-heavy image of "Dracula."

With his gentle demeanor and apparent high intelligence, Vlad III presents a completely different image from the historical portrayal of him.
Occasionally, there are moments that reveal his ruthless and unscrupulous resolve, offering glimpses of the man who would later be known as "Lord Impaler."
However, even though the methods may appear cruel at first glance, they are carried out based on cold, calculated steps to achieve the greatest effect, and are never done out of anger or hatred.

The early stages of the story, involving acquiring talented personnel, consolidating one's base, and building up military strength, unfold like a strategic simulation game, making it an exciting read.
The book also describes the background that led Vlad III to his current position.
My image of Vlad III has clearly changed since reading this work.

As of February 2019, there are two volumes published, but they end at a fairly good stopping point.
If history dictates it, the next step will be a conflict with the Ottoman Empire, and I'm very excited to see exactly how Vlad III will employ his tactics.
This is a highly recommended manga that will keep you hooked and wondering what happens next.
If you're interested in the Middle Ages and history, I highly recommend reading this.

(Added in February 2020)
In volume 3, the situation becomes such that war with the Ottoman Empire is finally unavoidable.
However, given Wallachia's overwhelmingly inferior national strength, their willingness to use any means necessary to buy time and strengthen their forces was remarkable.
Volume 3 ends just as the war is about to begin, so it's a good place to stop.
The real battle is about to begin, but I predict it will conclude in around volume 5 or 6.

(Added February 2021)
Volume 4 mainly depicts the war against the Ottoman Empire.
Wallachia, though inferior in national strength, fought bravely against the Ottomans, but was forced into a difficult situation due to the Ottomans' tactics and strategies.

(Added November 2021)
Volume 5 depicts the conclusion of the war against the Ottoman Empire.
The most famous episode, which also served as the origin of the name "Dracula," will finally be depicted.
This volume could be considered the climax of the story.
