Chaos Evil Dead (Free Survival Horror) Introduction, Impressions, and Strategy Notes

Chaos Evil Dead(フリー・サバイバルホラー)紹介・感想・攻略メモ game
This post can be read in about 7 minutes.

This article is about "Chaos Evil Dead," a survival horror game created with RPG Maker MV.
I had previously played the previous game, "Chaos Dead," and remembered it being fun, so when I heard that the sequel had been released, I decided to play it.

In terms of gameplay, it's easiest to understand if you think of it as a Resident Evil game made with RPG Maker.
Speaking of Resident Evil-like games made with RPG Maker, there was an older title called "Nobita's Resident Evil," which was quite well-made and became a hot topic.

While this game does have action elements, it's not overly demanding, so I think many people will enjoy it.
There is only one ending, and the game took about 5 hours to complete.
If you're interested, you might want to play the previous game first, as the gameplay isn't significantly different.

Game Overview

In the previous installment, a girl named Byakuya Hozuki, whose hometown was destroyed by a deadly virus, sets out to take revenge on those responsible.
Playing the previous game first will help you understand the story better, but I don't think playing this one first will significantly diminish the enjoyment.
Specifically, it's a game where you explore towns, schools, and research facilities while defeating enemies and progressing further.
The game features adventure elements such as combat with enemies, solving puzzles, and searching for keys.

battle

Combat is not clearly separated from exploration, and there is always the risk of getting into a fight.
Just like in Resident Evil, enemies may be on the path, or they may suddenly jump out from behind cover.
Enemy types vary in their movement speed and attack methods, but if you take damage and your HP reaches zero, it's game over without mercy.
You need to pay close attention to the protagonist's remaining HP.

In addition to the initial knife, your main means of attacking enemies will be ranged weapons such as bows and shotguns.
All projectile weapons require special ammunition, so you need to be careful not to waste shots during combat.
Since you can buy bullets and healing items with money, I think even people who aren't good at these kinds of games can clear it if they make full use of the shops.

search

I think this is the most important part of the work.
Upon arriving in a new location, the first thing to do is to explore every nook and cranny to acquire various items such as keys and supplies.
The real fun lies in how obtaining keys unlocks more and more new places to go, creating a chain reaction of discoveries like, "Oh, this item will probably be useful there."

Of course, you might overlook something or get stuck on a difficult puzzle, but I think that's all part of what makes this game so appealing.

Other elements

Another factor is the existence of skills.
While this game does have items that restore HP, the main means of recovery is through healing skills.
The protagonist can recover a certain amount of HP by consuming stamina.
Stamina is like MP; it can be replenished by using recovery items.

Additionally, some combat skills increase the power of certain weapons by consuming TP, which is accumulated through actions such as attacking enemies.
When your main weapon runs out or you want to conserve resources, using it proactively will prove effective.

Review (no spoilers)

I was so engrossed that I played through it all in one go.
The game has light action elements, but also includes instant-death mechanics, so it kept me engaged and entertained without becoming boring.
Using shops with money makes battles easier, so if you don't have any particular preferences, I think you should just use the shops as much as you can to progress through the game.
In fact, using the shop makes it easier, so if you find it a little difficult, I recommend using it as much as possible.
Since you can purchase replayable content with in-game currency after clearing the game, I felt that the game is designed to reward players who patiently save up money.

Regarding exploration, I was able to proceed without any particular problems by thoroughly searching the newly accessible areas.
However, if you don't carefully examine even the shelves and trash cans in the room, you might miss key items.
When it gets stuck,Re-examining an area you've already explored is quite time-consuming, so it's important to thoroughly investigate it during your initial exploration. That's what I felt.

I've often found myself wondering, "Where do I use this item?", so I think it's a good idea for forgetful people to jot it down.
I would have been even happier if there was a feature on the map screen that color-coded rooms that haven't been entered yet.

The instant-death tag mode that appears in the second half is simple yet tense.
Having the dash function constantly on means that if you suddenly encounter a demon, you won't be able to dodge and will die instantly, which I found a bit frustrating.
You can save frequently, and there's a clear announcement that there will be a game of tag, so I didn't think it was completely unfair.
However, since it's impossible to predict those points on the first try, I think many players will die.
I think it'll be fine since I'll remember it after clearing it once.

Regarding the story, I liked the cold, fair aspects, especially since the protagonist is a vengeful person.
There aren't many protagonists who don't sugarcoat things and act harshly towards others in extraordinary circumstances, so I found myself enjoying that.
Considering what the protagonist has been through, I suppose it's understandable that he would resort to such actions.

The way the protagonist corners the other characters through conversations is quite compelling.
Other works by the author (Eve and the start of conquering another worldSimilar to other methods, the characters' feelings are described in parentheses as they speak, so the conversations tend to be a bit long, but it should be easy to understand the thought process they went through.
The dialogue might be a bit long for this genre, but I think this style of writing is what makes this work special, and I like the protagonist's sadistic tendencies.

Strategy Notes (Contains Spoilers)

I'll be writing strategy notes about tips for playing this game, as well as some puzzles that I found a little difficult.

I found out after clearing the game, but the authorpixiv pageThey published strategy information there.
I managed to clear the game on my own, so I want to let you know that the strategy notes in this section are not copied from the page mentioned above, but were written independently.

Combat-related

- Turn off constant sprinting.
If you have the "Always Sprint" option enabled, you will walk while holding down the Shift key.
Therefore, since the attack button for weapons is Shift + A, it becomes impossible to fire weapons while running.
I think it's best to keep the constant sprinting feature turned off.

- Fighting with obstacles in between
In combat, situations often arise where you can attack unilaterally if there's a table between you.
Let's make good use of it.

- About the tag game in the second half
The points where tag games occur are fixed, so they don't happen randomly multiple times.
Often, a chase scene begins when you get a new key and go back to a previous floor.
If you're moving between floors, be sure to save frequently.

Puzzle solving, etc.

- The passcode for room 806 at the first hospital

The mirror has "DACB" written on it.
If you assemble the passcode based on the graffiti such as "B 3" found on the walls of the corridors on each floor of the hospital, it comes out to 7053.
Afterward, using the unlock code in room 803 will allow you to obtain "Modification Part A".

• School computer room

The powered-on PCs and the powered-off PCs are represented as 1s and 0s, respectively, to represent a 5-digit binary number.
In the case of an image, the number would be 36608.
(From top: 2^0 + 2^1 = 3, 2^1 + 2^2 = 6, same to the left, 0, 2^4 = 8)

·greenhouse
To remove weeds, you need not only herbicides but also weed strengtheners.
The enhancement agent can be obtained in the laboratory by using an authentication code.

- Passcode for the picture in Room 8

We need to find the lyrics to the song "Even One Carrot Can Be a Good One."
Arrange the pictures in order from 1 to 5, and then consider how many of them there actually are in the lyrics.
"8 animals is still a whale," "2 pairs of shoes is still a sandal," "3 boats is still a yacht," "6 birds is still a turkey," and "5 vehicles is still a rocket," so the answer is 82365.
Once you have the key pick, go and get compound drug B from the shelf in the upper right corner of the operating room on floor B3.

・Power room
Using the valve handle and solid fuel in the engine room will trigger a time-limit event.
You cannot activate the power to the elevator to B4F unless you have checked it at least once.
Be especially careful from the second playthrough onwards.
Furthermore, you won't be able to defeat the boss unless you've created the "mixed drug" before starting the game.
Let's go to the compounding room to get the medication and mix it.

Regarding the replayability element

After clearing the game, you can move to a bonus room where you can enjoy conversations with each character.
You can also use money at the shop to purchase items that will carry over to your second playthrough.
The items and morphine you can buy at this shop will carry over, so it's a good idea to buy a variety of things.
Also, if you reincarnate and start a second playthrough, your level will be carried over.
