Mahjong strategy book "The Mahjong Mechanism of the Master Mahjong Player" (Author: Naoki Takiguchi)

麻雀戦術本「鬼打ち天鳳位の麻雀メカニズム」(著:滝口直樹氏) mahjong
This post can be read in about 3 minutes.

This book systematically covers tactics that can help improve your mahjong game.
Since the author writes about things they practice on a daily basis, the content is easy for readers to implement.
If you become familiar with tile shapes after reading Mr. Uzaku's book on what to discard, and then put into practice what is written in this book, your performance should improve considerably.
However, for players who have consistently stayed in the Phoenix League, much of the content will likely be considered common knowledge, so it might be just right for someone like me who is aiming for the Phoenix League.

Part 1: Opening Hand Composition

The "opening phase" in mahjong is something that inevitably occurs in every game, so mastering the correct hand formation at this stage will be useful every time.
For example, it systematically explains things like which tiles to prioritize discarding—honor tiles, wind tiles, or number tiles—and what kind of hand you should aim for.

PART 2: The Danger Level of the Tiles

This section deals with the "risk level of a tile," which is relevant to deciding whether to push or fold in a game.
This book goes beyond simply discussing tiles that are safe, tiles that are both safe or one safe, and introduces a system that allows you to find some safe tiles even when there are no safe tiles at all.
While there may not be any new discoveries, this is an important point for improving the accuracy of risk assessment methods.

PART 3: Deciding whether to fold completely

I believe that many players, even at the highest level of mahjong, have properly mastered the technique of folding.
However, even when simply getting off the train, there are various checkpoints, and I discovered many points that should be incorporated into the process.

PART 4 Reading the Broken Letters

Personally, I found this section to be the most valuable.
I'm terrible at reading tiles that have been called, and I wasn't very good at working backward from the tiles that were called and discarded.
While it may not be much of an issue when you have a clear decision to either push or get off, I think it's a point that comes into play when making a subtle decision.

PART 5: Score Assessment

This section overlapped with things I've recently started to prioritize, so there weren't many new discoveries for me.
One thing I can say is that simply being mindful of this aspect has significantly improved my performance in the last 500 or so games.
This may be obvious to those who always play in East Wind games, but the way you think about things, especially in the South Wind game, is extremely important.
If you've never heard of what's written here and haven't tried it yet, I think this is a great opportunity to improve your performance.

PART 6 Bringing work forward

This was an important point for raising awareness on a daily basis.
Especially when trying out new things, there's a lot to think about, and it can be very challenging.
This teaches us that it's important to anticipate what might necessitate long-term consideration and think about it proactively, rather than waiting until long-term consideration is needed.

In conclusion

I'm currently a 6th dan aiming for a 7th dan, and I've heard of all the topics covered.
That doesn't mean, of course, that there's little to gain from this book.
It boosted my confidence that the direction of my thinking was correct, and it allowed me to refine the points that were previously unclear.
For those who are stuck with their own self-taught playing style, I think it's important to incorporate the new checkpoints in this book and try them out in actual play.
