Just the other day, I was unfortunately demoted from 6th dan to 5th dan on Tenhou.
I had some unlucky last-place finishes, but I can't just blame it on bad luck, so I'll try to reflect on what I need to improve and what I can do better.
Since it's pointless to speak based on intuition, I'll compare my own performance with that of a certain Tenhou champion, based on Tenhou's analysis results.
We will focus on the areas where there are significant differences and consider the reasons behind them.
All numerical comparisons in this article are in the order of "Tenhou Champion / Myself".

Winning data
Comparing the winning hand data, the biggest differences are as follows:
・Win rate 23.7% / 20.1%
・Worry score 5266 / 5704
My winning rate is 3% lower, and my base score is 400 to 500 points higher.
I suspect that I often get too fixated on what I'm doing face-to-face, which leads to my opponent taking the initiative and forcing me to fold.
Therefore, when you win, you'll have a decent hand, and I think you'll end up with a higher score.
Discard data
- Delayed discard expenditure: -4351 / -5053
- Number of shanten (shanten) when dealing into a winning hand: 0.635 / 0.916
- Rate of discarding a winning tile without reaching two open tiles: 0.529 / 0.655
- Discarding a Pinfu (a type of winning hand in Mahjong) 0.163 / 0.244
- Discarded into a Tanyao hand: 0.192 / 0.269
- Rate of discarding a winning tile when the opponent has declared riichi: 0.240 / 0.185
- Rate of calling two tiles when dealing into a winning hand: 0.240 / 0.160
- Rate of not calling a tile when dealing into a winning hand: 0.404 / 0.319
Overall, their defense is poor.
There are many problems, such as not being careful enough against high-scoring hands, pushing too hard to complete a hand, and not being careful enough against opponents who have made two calls.
ピンフ、タンヤオへの振込みも多いので、スジ通った19牌以外で押しているときも多いのでしょう。
This can be seen as pushing too hard to complete a hand, but it also often stems from poor judgment in not folding when there's an opportunity to do so.
Reach data
Revenue at the time of reaching: 8730 / 9434
・Reach win rate 0.561 / 0.503
- Winning rate after declaring Riichi: 0.341 / 0.482
- Rate of having a bad hand when declaring Riichi: 0.325 / 0.379
・Gugata time winning rate 0.549 / 0.469
I earn more when I declare "reach," but there's a significant difference in our winning percentages.
I think one of the reasons for this is the abundance of awkward shapes.
Even so, the fact that there's such a big difference in winning rates even with the same awkward hand shape suggests that there might be some kind of strategy to make the wait easier to draw.
Draft data
・1 secondary dew rate 0.391 / 0.352
・2 secondary dew rate 0.162 / 0.137
・1 secondary dew average order 6.768 / 7.052
・Win rate during 2nd round 0.365 / 0.316
• Percentage of winning by self-drawing when two tiles are open: 0.389 / 0.287
As I suspected, there still seems to be a small amount of exposure.
The average order in which they begin to sing also seems to be a little late.
The Tenhou champion's winning rate increases significantly as they make more calls, so I think they're making skillful calls to turn weak hands into good ones.
Singing data
Singing rate: 0.343 / 0.300
Number of calls per round: 0.427 / 0.372
Win rate when singing 0.220 / 0.192
There isn't much difference, but the difference lies in whether you are able to raise your own level properly even when you make them sing.
I wonder if the technique of deliberately making them squeal is also included in this.
assignment
Overall, I feel that we need to improve our defensive awareness.
Improvements are needed in areas such as being cautious of concealed hands, being wary of two open melds, refraining from pushing when one hand is one shanten, and avoiding dealing into a hand with a simple hand.
In attack, it seems necessary to be proactive in calling tiles, be creative in waiting for tiles in awkward positions, and build up to good positions.
For the time being, I plan to keep these things in mind while playing and studying at the same time.
