Preface

This article introduces the manga "Draft King," which has been serialized in Grand Jump since 2018.
The first part of the book was available for free as an ebook, so I tried reading it and got hooked.

If I were to list some keywords that describe this work, they would be words like scout, draft meeting, amateur baseball, and professional baseball player.
While portraying professional baseball as the pinnacle of the sport, this work realistically depicts the harsh realities of professional baseball and the differences between it and amateur baseball.

If you like "Gurazeni," you might really enjoy this.
While "Gurazeni" is about the money earned by professional baseball players, I feel that "Draft King" focuses on the harsh realities of entering and exiting the professional world.

As of August 2022, 12 volumes have been published and the series is still ongoing.

Story Summary

This story revolves around two characters: Kamiki, a young scout for the Yokohama Baygoals, and Gohara Aura, a self-proclaimed top-class scout.
The story primarily depicts, with realistic detail, the process of discovering players to draft and the strategies involved in getting them selected and signed by a team.

For example, let me briefly introduce the beginning of the first episode, "The Second Man."
During the scouting meeting, Kamiki recommends Tojo, the ace pitcher of a strong high school in his assigned area, as the first overall pick, but Gohara recommends Katsuragi, the second-string pitcher.
While everyone agrees that Tojo is superior, Gohara, a highly skilled scout, explains from his unique perspective that Katsuragi is more suited to playing professionally.
As a result of the meeting, the final conclusion reached by the scouting department was...

This is what it says.
Each episode consists of several parts, and while each episode is self-contained, it's common for draft prospects who appeared in other episodes to make appearances.

Review (no spoilers)

Despite his foul mouth and arrogant attitude, Gohara's keen eye for talent is arguably the most appealing aspect of this work.
Kamiki voices the things that ordinary people like us think, but he gets slammed every time he does, which makes me feel sorry for him.
ただ、選手を見る目は未熟な神木ですが、選手への青臭い情熱と誠実な対応で、少しずつ郷原に認められるようになっていくのは面白いところです。
This work features many characters whose words and actions are not respectable, but it becomes clear that each of them possesses "firm beliefs," so you can't simply label them as evil.
Even though they appear to be villains, they don't try to hide their true selves, which makes them seem even more evil.
However, since scouts bear the responsibility of potentially changing a player's life, they shouldn't be swayed by the opinions of others, so perhaps this is one way of being.

Reading this book makes you realize once again just how incredibly talented professional baseball players are.
I also found the world of scouting, which is not usually visible to ordinary people like us, and the behind-the-scenes aspects of the draft selection process, to be interesting even in fiction.
I realized there's a lot of depth to the process behind the scenes when they announce which round a player is being drafted in.

Furthermore, even when the players Gohara recommends seem to be following an unconventional or eccentric path, his careful logic and analysis persuasive power is remarkable, making readers genuinely believe that these players are indeed appealing.
Because Gohara doesn't seem to care much about what others think of him and doesn't offer much explanation, he's often misunderstood by those around him, which can be frustrating for readers.
However, these misunderstandings are often resolved in the end, and that satisfying resolution is one of the charms of this work.

The rival scout, Busujima, is also portrayed as a formidable competitor, adding to the tension and excitement of the story.
While it might be a slight inaccuracy to call this a baseball manga, I think it's a baseball drama with strong documentary-like elements, in the sense that it depicts baseball from a different perspective than before.
If you're even slightly interested, why not give it a read?
